Let x = y --------- (1)

=> 2x = 2y (multiplying both sides by 2) 

=> 2x-x = 2y-x (subtracting x from both sides) 

=> 2x-x = 2y-x (from eq. (1)) 

=> y-x = 2y-2x 

=> (y-x) = 2(y-x) 

=> 1 = 2
